What is Jordan Belfort’s Net Worth: Jordan Belfort, an American former stockbroker, convicted felon, and author, has a net worth of negative $100 million. He is often known as “the wolf of Wall Street,” a nickname he gave himself while writing his memoir from jail.
Between 1989 and 1996, Jordan ran the financial firm Stratton Oakmont, which orchestrated pump-and-dump schemes defrauding hundreds of millions from thousands of innocent victims. In 1999, Belfort and his co-founder Danny Porush were indicted for securities fraud and money laundering, eventually pleading guilty in exchange for reduced sentences upon cooperating with prosecutors.
Jordan’s life was loosely portrayed in the 2013 film “The Wolf of Wall Street,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and directed by Martin Scorsese. The film raised controversies about the portrayal of Belfort and the lack of emphasis on the victims of his financial crimes.
Restitution: During his fraudulent activities, Jordan stole around $200 million from 1,513 victims. His 2003 sentencing ordered him to repay $110 million as restitution, serve four years in prison (reduced for cooperation), and pay 50% of his gross income to victims. Despite such terms, Jordan has repaid only a fraction, still owing his victims around $100 million.
In 2018, prosecutors took Jordan to court for not paying roughly $9 million in speaking fees earned from 2013 to 2015 towards restitution.
Invented “Wolf of Wall Street” Nickname: The nickname associated with Jordan from his book and movie was self-attributed, and no evidence supports him being referred to as such during his finance career.
