To extend the lifespan of vape coils, cleaning is essential. While coils need replacement over time, cleaning them can help save money in the long run.
Check out our previous post on extending coil life here. This post focuses on cleaning coils for standard devices and rebuildable atomizers.
Cleaning Standard Vape Coils

If you have a device with standard pre-built coils like the Innokin Zenith II, consider cleaning the coil as an option. While devices like the Kroma 217 and Coolfire Z80 utilize ACM technology to extend coil life, performance will decrease over time.
Burnt flavors and decreased vapor output occur due to residue buildup from heated e-liquid.To try and eke out a few extra days of usage from your coil, consider giving it a clean, even though it won’t restore it to full performance.
Guide on cleaning standard vape coils
- Remove the coil from your tank or device if the vaping experience has significantly worsened.
- Rinse the coil under hot water briefly to help dislodge some outer residue layers.
- Submerge the coil in boiling water for around 30 minutes within a container.
- Let the coil air dry completely for 24 hours.
Although a cleaned coil won’t match a new one in performance, it can prolong its lifespan, saving you money and reducing waste.

Coils in rebuildable atomizers are engineered for cleaning and long-term reuse as opposed to the stock coils. With the ability to remove wicking material and the coil, the cleaning of rebuildable coils is more thorough, yielding superior results.
How to clean rebuildable vape coils?
- If your vaping experience has drastically declined, detach the atomizer deck from your rebuildable dripper or tank.
- Eliminate all wicking material from the coil and wicking channels while leaving the coil in place.
- Run the atomizer deck under hot water briefly.
- Examine the atomizer deck and use a damp paper towel with hot water to remove any remaining residue.
- Let the atomizer deck dry completely.
- Mount the atomizer deck on a regulated mod, such as the Kroma 217.
- Activate the coil in short intervals at approximately 50% of your vaping wattage until it glows.
- Check the coil between intervals for lingering residue and gently scrape it off with tweezers or a small flathead screwdriver.
- Once all visible residue is gone, rinse the coil carefully under warm water to remove any debris that fell into the deck.
- Allow the atomizer to dry fully.
After completing these steps, you can re-wick and prime the coil to resume vaping at peak performance. With proper maintenance, a quality coil in rebuildable atomizers can endure for months, making tanks like the Ares 2 a great value proposition for those interested in mastering building techniques!
